Subtracting Two Numbers
Adding Two Numbers

Addition and subtraction are so important for students to master. Here are some ways to help your child!

If your child is struggling with adding two single-digit numbers such as 3 + 4 or 2+5,

Here are ways to help with adding:

  1. Write the numbers 1-20 down for them in a straight line, creating a number line for them. Have your child jump numbers to add (as the frog in the upper image is doing).

  2. Draw a picture to help your child picture the numbers being added together.

If your child is having a hard time with subtracting two single-digit numbers such as 7-4 or 9-3

Here are ways to help them:

  1. Write the numbers 1-20 down for them in a straight line, creating a number line. Have your child jump backwards, subtracting as many numbers as necessary (as shown in the picture above).

  2. Draw a picture to help your child visual the numbers, cover or easer the number of things being subtracted (as shown in picture above).

It is important for students to ALWAYS add the ones position of the problem first. In the above examples, 8+3 and 6+7 would be added first because they are in the ones position.

  • Regrouping: We call these types of problems regrouping because the when the students add the ones position, their answer will be greater than 10.

    • In the example above, 6 + 7 = 13. The 1 needs to be placed in the box on the tens side to show the regrouping. The 3 is placed below the line under the 7. The student then adds 1 + 4 + 3 on the tens side and writing 8 below the line. Giving them answer of 83.

It is important for students to ALWAYS add and subtract the ones side of the problem first.

In the examples above, the student would add 3 + 6 first because those numbers are in the ones position. Next the student would add 4+5, adding the tens position second.

This is the same for subtraction: subtract the ones position first then the tens position.
